Computer vision for automated inspection, edge AI for real-time analytics, and natural language processing to improve user interaction — including LLM-facing tooling such as Deftio's own open-source chat and markdown components.

Circuit design, sensors and mixed-signal systems. This is where Touchstone's inductive charging began — as analog engineering long before it became a product on a shelf.

Microcontroller programming and embedded software, including DSP work on audio and signal paths — the kind of code that has to run correctly on hardware with no floating point unit and no room for error.

Carrying a concept from breadboard and prototype through to a manufacturable, shippable product — the path Touchstone and Hiku both took, from lab bench to retail shelf.

Project 01

Touchstone Charging Technology

Palm / HP · 2007–2011 · Wireless Power

Challenge. Deliver inductive, connector-free charging for a consumer tablet that felt effortless rather than gimmicky — reliable power transfer, a comfortable viewing angle, and an object people would actually want on a desk.

Solution. Precision inductive coil and power-electronics design paired with an easel-back industrial form, letting the HP TouchPad charge in either portrait or landscape orientation without a single cable.

Outcome. Shipped as the HP Touchstone Charging Dock, a patented wireless charging system built during work as Sr. Director of Advanced Technology at Palm/HP.

Project 02

Hiku Smart Shopping Assistant

Consumer IoT · Barcode + Voice

Challenge. Turn the everyday act of noticing "we're out of milk" into a shared, always-current shopping list — without asking anyone to type on a phone standing at the fridge.

Solution. A small wireless device combining a barcode scanner and a microphone: scan a product or say its name, and it syncs instantly to a household's mobile app over Wi-Fi.

Outcome. A device-agnostic product experience that connected embedded hardware, cloud recognition and mobile software into one simple everyday habit.

Project 03

Lampdesk webVM → webOS

Founded 2006 · Acquired by Palm, 2007 · Platform Evolution

Lampdesk was founded to build WebVM — a way to run HTML, CSS and JavaScript applications offline, treating the browser's own stack as an application runtime rather than just a document viewer. Palm acquired the technology in 2007. That same HTML/CSS/JavaScript application-platform lineage went on to become webOS, the operating system that today runs on LG's smart TVs.

Project 04

Graph Data Visualization for Trensant.ai

Trensant · AI Data Analytics · Acquired 2018

Challenge. Financial-market and supply-chain risk doesn't move in neat rows and columns — it moves as a network, and analysts needed to see the shape of that network changing as it happened.

Solution. Real-time graph-based data visualization tracking risk signals across roughly 85,000 distinct data sources, rendered so relationships and shifts were visible at a glance rather than buried in a spreadsheet.

Outcome. Trensant, the AI-powered data analytics company behind this work, was acquired in 2018.

Deftio LLC is an engineering technology firm specializing in the seamless integration of software and hardware innovations. Its work spans electrical engineering, software development and hands-on project management — the same combination behind patented work like Touchstone wireless charging and contributions to webOS.

Deftio is led by Manu Chatterjee, an electrical engineer (Case Western Reserve University) who has built and shipped hardware and software products across several companies: Sr. Director of Advanced Technology at Palm/HP, founder and CEO of Lampdesk, and founder and CEO of Trensant. Since 2019 he has provided engineering consulting through Deftio — business and product strategy, startup advising, intellectual-property guidance, and hands-on prototyping across hardware and software.

The practice is based in San Francisco, California, and draws on modern engineering process — Git/GitHub, JIRA, Agile and Kanban — to keep technically ambitious projects on schedule and in scope.
